Sea Star Resort

Built entirely on stilts over shallow turquoise waters, this resort is designed for travelers seeking tranquility, ocean views, and easy access to superb snorkeling and island-hopping adventures.

A Simple Slice of Overwater Bliss

If you're picturing a massive five-star complex with infinity pools and drone-porn architecture—this isn't that. The Sea Star Resort is more humble, and that’s kind of the point. Perched just a few minutes by boat from Semporna town, the resort floats peacefully above shallow emerald waters, giving you that dreamy "walking-on-water" feeling the moment you check in.

The overwater chalets comfortable, have a nice local design with a touch of luxury. Enjoy the wooden floors under your bare feet and direct access to the sea from your private balcony where you can watch schools of fish swim beneath your chalet. There’s Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and hot showers, but the real luxury is the amazing seascape and views of Bohey Dulang Island in the distance.

Snorkeling Straight from Your Room

One of my favorite things about Sea Star Resort? You don’t need to book a tour to start exploring the marine life. slip on your marine life and jump off the stairs from your balcony and within seconds, you will be floating and enjoying the schools of fish darting about the sandy floor. The underwater life is not exceptionnal like it is at nearby Sipadan and Mabul islands, but the accessibility is unbeatable.

Island Hopping

Activities include island-hopping trips. Start with a steep but rewarding hike up Bohey Dulang with views from the top being postcards like. From there, snorkel off to the beautiful Sibuan Island, a local favorite of with crystal clear waters. On the way back, swing by less visited islands such as Mantabuan Island, it’s quieter than the usual stops.

Mabul and Sipadan Diving and Snorkeling

Now, let’s talk scuba diving. While Sea Star Resort isn’t a dedicated dive resort, after staying a night or two there, you can continue your journey to the famous Mabul island and to Sipadan island (need to book your permit in advance). On a typical few days snorkeling or diving trip to Mabul, you can see a lof of marine life from sea turtles to flamboyant cuttlefish.

As for Sipadan? It’s still one of the best dives on Earth, but you’ll need to plan ahead. Securing a Sipadan permit requires flexibility and a touch of luck. Experience the famous Barracuda Point where divers can watch the swirling vortex of thousands of barracudas.

Who Is Sea Star Resort For?

In my experience, Sea Star is perfect for couples on a mid-range trip or honeymoon upgrading their trip with one or two nights of overwater serenity. It’s not ultra-luxe like the luxury island resort in Bora Bora or the Maldives, and that’s okay, It’s Sabahan, and if you're willing to embrace simplicity, you’ll be rewarded with that kind of slow, sweet island magic.

Final Thoughts

Semporna is often seen as a jump-off point to the “real” experiences further out such as Mabul and Sipadan, and places like Sea Star Resort represent something that can be great for couples looking for a romantic getaway for just a night or two before continuing their trip to the world famous islands of Mabul and Sipadan.

So pack your reef-safe sunscreen, bring your sense of curiosity, and just seat back and relax at Sea Star Resort.
